mySharp was designed to give you access to your health care information without compromising your privacy. There are key features in place to verify your identity and ensure that your personal information can only be accessed by you and your health care providers. These include identity proofing during online sign up, two-factor authentication or security questions during the login process and a unique security phrase that displays when you log in to the full site.
mySharp complies with guidelines set by HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.Top of page
We use your Social Security number (SSN) to connect your mySharp account to your medical records. With so many possible variations in names and addresses (e.g., Christopher vs. Chris), we've found that using your Social Security number is the best way to ensure that your medical information is available only to you. In addition, we use advanced security measures to safeguard your personal information and protect your privacy.
For Sharp Rees-Stealy patients who would prefer not to provide their full Social Security number on the sign-up form, we offer an alternative sign-up option. You may visit a Sharp Rees-Stealy location or call us at 858-627-5201. A customer service representative will verify your identity, locate your patient record and email you a link to sign up. For your security, you will be prompted to enter the last four digits of your Social Security number so we can verify your identity.
Non-Sharp Rees-Stealy patients who prefer not to provide a Social Security number will need to print and fill out a form, have it notarized and mail it to: Sharp Rees-Stealy Health Information Management, 2929 Health Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92123. At this time, this is the only way that we can verify your identity if you are not already in our system. If you have any questions, call us at 619-585-4088.Top of page
The security phrase helps to protect your account against phishing attempts. Phishing is a form of fraud that typically involves phony email and websites. In some cases, an attacker will attempt to steal a user's account information by directing the user to a website that looks identical to the legitimate version of the site.
Since your unique security phrase will only display on the full site once you've entered your username, attackers won't be able to reproduce this information on a phony site. Therefore, when you see your security phrase on the login page, you can feel confident that you are at the real mySharp website.
If you're having trouble coming up with a security phrase, think of your favorite hobbies, sports teams, restaurants or pets and incorporate one of these items into your phrase.Top of page
mySharp's identity proofing process is designed to protect patient privacy and prevent identity theft. It requires you to answer a set of specific questions before gaining access to your records for the first time. We are working with a national credit agency to verify your identity. This agency selects questions based on information found in public and semi public records. Sharp HealthCare will never see your answers. If the agency is unable to verify your identity through this process, we will ask you to call our Technical Assistance Center at 858-627-5201 for further assistance.
After going through the identity verification process, you may notice an inquiry on your credit report. This type of inquiry is known as a "soft inquiry." It occurs when a business checks your credit for reasons not involving a credit application. This "soft inquiry" is not viewable to lenders and will not affect your credit score.Top of page
Two-Factor Authentication (Single-Use PIN)
Two-factor authentication provides additional protections of your information during the login process and requires the use of two distinct forms of verification to log into an account, usually a combination of "something you know" (e.g., a password) and "something you have" (e.g., your phone). The use of two-factor authentication can significantly reduce the risk of identity theft and unauthorized access to your sensitive health information.
With two-factor authentication you will use your password and a single-use PIN, which will be sent to your phone (by voice or text) whenever we don't recognize the computer or device you are using. With each login, you will have the opportunity to choose where (home or cell) and how (voice or text) you receive your PIN. Once you enter the PIN, you will have the option to "remember this computer for one year," during which time you may only be required to enter your username and password. PINs expire 15 minutes after they are sent.
Sharp HealthCare recommends this option.
Please note that this option will limit access to your account to within the United States. If you need to access mySharp from outside the country, you can adjust your security settings before you go by visiting "Account Settings" and selecting the Security Questions option.
If you do not want to use two-factor authentication to access mySharp, you will need to set up three personal security questions and answers. To log in, you need only to enter your password and answer the security question. Once you answer your personal security question, you will have the option to "remember this computer for one year," during which time you may only be required to enter your username and password.
This option will allow you to access mySharp from within or outside the United States.
You may update your security options at any time by visiting "Account Settings."Top of page
