About mySharp

mySharp Overview

mySharp is a secure and personal way to manage your health care - and the care of loved ones - online. You can communicate with the doctor's office, schedule appointments, view selected test results, see a snapshot of your medical record and more. At this time, many features are for Sharp Rees-Stealy patients.

Sharp Rees-Stealy patients will have full access to their health information through mySharp. If you are not a Sharp Rees-Stealy patient, learn more about what you can do with mySharp.

To sign up, you must be 18 years of age or older. Emancipated minors are not able to sign up for mySharp at this time.

Access to Loved Ones' Accounts

To manage another account, you must first sign up for mySharp yourself. When you log in for the first time, you will see an option to manage another person's health care.

If you are already registered, log in to mySharp and visit Manage mySharp Settings. You will be able to request access to manage the Sharp Rees-Stealy accounts for your children, spouse, parents and loved ones.

If you had a baby at a Sharp hospital on or after June 12, 2012, you have automatically been granted access to the child's account. Once you have signed up and logged in to mySharp, you can switch accounts by using the "Viewing account for" drop-down menu at the top of the page.

If you do not see your baby's name in the drop-down menu and you gave birth at a Sharp hospital on or after June 12, 2012, please contact our Technical Assistance Center at 858-627-5201.

Security

mySharp and Your Privacy

mySharp was designed to give you access to your health care information without compromising your privacy. There are key features in place to verify your identity and ensure that your personal information can only be accessed by you and your health care providers. These include identity proofing during online sign up, two-factor authentication or security questions during the login process and a unique security phrase that displays when you log in to the full site.

mySharp complies with guidelines set by HIPAA, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

Why do I need to provide my Social Security number during the sign-up process?

We use your Social Security number (SSN) to connect your mySharp account to your medical records. With so many possible variations in names and addresses (e.g., Christopher vs. Chris), we've found that using your Social Security number is the best way to ensure that your medical information is available only to you. In addition, we use advanced security measures to safeguard your personal information and protect your privacy.

For Sharp Rees-Stealy patients who would prefer not to provide their full Social Security number on the sign-up form, we offer an alternative sign-up option. You may visit a Sharp Rees-Stealy location or call us at 858-627-5201. A customer service representative will verify your identity, locate your patient record and email you a link to sign up. For your security, you will be prompted to enter the last four digits of your Social Security number so we can verify your identity.

Non-Sharp Rees-Stealy patients who prefer not to provide a Social Security number will need to print and fill out a form, have it notarized and mail it to: Sharp Rees-Stealy Health Information Management, 2929 Health Center Drive, San Diego, CA 92123. At this time, this is the only way that we can verify your identity if you are not already in our system. If you have any questions, call us at 619-585-4088.

What is a security phrase?

The security phrase helps to protect your account against phishing attempts. Phishing is a form of fraud that typically involves phony email and websites. In some cases, an attacker will attempt to steal a user's account information by directing the user to a website that looks identical to the legitimate version of the site.

Since your unique security phrase will only display on the full site once you've entered your username, attackers won't be able to reproduce this information on a phony site. Therefore, when you see your security phrase on the login page, you can feel confident that you are at the real mySharp website.

If you're having trouble coming up with a security phrase, think of your favorite hobbies, sports teams, restaurants or pets and incorporate one of these items into your phrase.

What is the identity verification process?

mySharp's identity proofing process is designed to protect patient privacy and prevent identity theft. It requires you to answer a set of specific questions before gaining access to your records for the first time. We are working with a national credit agency to verify your identity. This agency selects questions based on information found in public and semi public records. Sharp HealthCare will never see your answers. If the agency is unable to verify your identity through this process, we will ask you to call our Technical Assistance Center at 858-627-5201 for further assistance.

After going through the identity verification process, you may notice an inquiry on your credit report. This type of inquiry is known as a "soft inquiry." It occurs when a business checks your credit for reasons not involving a credit application. This "soft inquiry" is not viewable to lenders and will not affect your credit score.

About Your Security Options

  • Two-Factor Authentication (Single-use PIN)
  • Security Questions

Two-Factor Authentication (Single-Use PIN)

Two-factor authentication provides additional protections of your information during the login process and requires the use of two distinct forms of verification to log into an account, usually a combination of "something you know" (e.g., a password) and "something you have" (e.g., your phone). The use of two-factor authentication can significantly reduce the risk of identity theft and unauthorized access to your sensitive health information.

With two-factor authentication you will use your password and a single-use PIN, which will be sent to your phone (by voice or text) whenever we don't recognize the computer or device you are using. With each login, you will have the opportunity to choose where (home or cell) and how (voice or text) you receive your PIN. Once you enter the PIN, you will have the option to "remember this computer for one year," during which time you may only be required to enter your username and password. PINs expire 15 minutes after they are sent.

Sharp HealthCare recommends this option.

Please note that this option will limit access to your account to within the United States. If you need to access mySharp from outside the country, you can adjust your security settings before you go by visiting "Account Settings" and selecting the Security Questions option.

Security Questions

If you do not want to use two-factor authentication to access mySharp, you will need to set up three personal security questions and answers. To log in, you need only to enter your password and answer the security question. Once you answer your personal security question, you will have the option to "remember this computer for one year," during which time you may only be required to enter your username and password.

This option will allow you to access mySharp from within or outside the United States.

You may update your security options at any time by visiting "Account Settings."

Why doesn't "Remember this computer for one year" work for me?

There are several reasons why this might be happening:

  • Significant changes have occurred with your trusted computer
    • Your Internet service provider (ISP) has changed
    • Your operating system has changed
    • You are outside the state of California
    • Other security-based concerns
  • Your browser is not set to store cookies or is set to delete cookies frequently
    (learn how to enable cookies)
  • It has been more than 12 months since you set the computer to be trusted

Unfortunately, some computer or Internet service provider settings will not allow you to bypass this step when logging in.
